The main function of stroma cells is to help support organs and act as connective tissue for particular organs. The connective tissue here connects to the parenchyma cells of things such as blood vessels and nerves. The stroma cells will help to reduce stress over the organ.

Growth factors, chemokines, proteases and inflammatory factors that are secreted by stromal or tumor cells, promote the opening of junctions between endothelial cells.

Stromal cell-derived factor 1 (SDF-1) is a chemokine that has been shown to be active in homeostatic mechanisms and developmental processes throughout the body, such as endochondral bone formation. SDF-1 plays a role in the transition from cartilage to bone.
